Height: 6-foot-4
Weight: 227 pounds
Projected Position: Tight end or outside receiver

Rivals: Four-star, No. 14 tight end nationally, No. 7 player in Virginia
247: Three-star, No. 65 wide receiver nationally, No. 9 player in Virginia
ESPN: Three-star, No. 7 H-back nationally, No. 12 player in Virginia

James Mitchell was the top star in Southwest Virginia in the 2018 class, and one of the top-10 players in the state according to the majority of recruiting/scouting services.  The Hokies made him a priority, and beat out Duke and Georgia in the end.  It was a lean year for talent overall around the state, but Mitchell is one of the better prospects.

Mitchell is a versatile offensive player who can play H-back or outside receiver.  We’ll likely see him lined up at many spots during the course of his career.  Here’s a look at his high school highlight tape…

That’s his junior year highlight tape.  I didn’t include his senior year tape, because he spent the majority of the season playing quarterback.  In that respect, he’s somewhat similar to 2017 signee Caleb Farley, though he lacks Farley’s top end speed.
