On Feb. 24, the junior basketball season of First Baptist Christian Academy (SC) three-star Michel Dukes came to a close. Dukes finished with 22 points as the Hurricanes lost in the SCISA Class AAA state championship game.

Despite Dukes’ importance to his high school basketball team, his recruiting has predominantly been for his football skills. Dukes,’s No. 8 football player in South Carolina for 2019, has 10 offers, most recently from Arkansas, Indiana and East Carolina. No offers have come from the basketball side to this point.

Still, Dukes (5-foot-10, 191 pounds) is holding out hope as his travel basketball season gets underway. He rushed for 1,465 yards last fall, but hopes to have the opportunity to continue his hoops career, too.

“I think basketball and football go together with each other,” Dukes said. “They both help me out with each side. I would like to play either. But, I’m just going to choose which one provides me the best opportunity for me and my family.”

For now, Dukes said he’s going with what he realizes is his best opportunity, which for now, is football. Over the past month, he attended junior days at Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. On March 17 he plans to visit East Carolina, and on March 24 he plans to be at South Carolina.

“It’s the same thing that I look for (from each school),” Dukes said. “Basically, it’s academics first, then the coach relationship. Then, it’s playing time and the atmosphere.
