1) Regarding football and basketball coaching pay, how close do you think Tech is to the line in being able to offer salary bumps? I love the success the football and basketball teams are having, but the corollary is that it will take more money every one to two years to keep the head coaches here. Is the Athletic Department anywhere close to a point of saying, “Sorry, this is what we can do, the well is dry”? – SBP94 

Chris Coleman: That’s a good question, and I’ve often wondered the same.  Recently I said that I thought the Hokies were moving back towards running in the black after running slightly in the red for fiscal year 2015-16.  However, sources indicate that Tech was actually about $3 million in the red for fiscal year 2016-17. We’ll have our financial report ready in a month or two with the actual numbers.

That’s not a huge deal, as plenty of teams outside the biggest schools run in the red sometimes.  Cal, Illinois (even with that Big Ten TV money), Washington and Arizona are examples of athletic departments than ran in the red in 2015-16.
