CJ Johnson doesn’t have a list of favorites at this point, but the junior at DH Conley High School in Greenville, N.C. has started to take inventory of his options.
Johnson, a Class of 2019 receiver, holds five early offers from Virginia Tech, NC State, Wake Forest, Duke and East Carolina. His most recent pair of visits, however, were to Blacksburg and the Hokies have certainly made an impression.
“It was nice, especially the Clemson game,” Johnson said. “They went all out and the fan base was amazing. They had the whole stadium shaking. Even when they were warming up, that place was packed.”
Johnson was back in Blacksburg Oct. 28 for Virginia Tech’s win over Duke.
“There wasn’t a major difference,” Johnson said of the two games. “You could definitely tell the importance of the Clemson game. But the fans, there were still a lot of people there.
“The first time, I went with my coaches. I thought it was amazing, the entrance and how everything had meaning. It was cool and I thought I definitely had to bring my brother there. I think they’re a good program and they put a lot of people in the NFL.”
Assistant coach Charley Wiles has been Johnson’s primary recruiter. They’ve continued to talk regularly since Wiles offered him earlier this fall.
“He’s a great guy and I really like him,” Johnson said. “He has a lot of energy and he seems very interested in having me go there and stuff. The first time I went on a visit, we went to the practice facility and they had the redshirt freshmen talking. This one guy, he said he had a career ending back injury and the coaches let him stay on and keep his scholarship. I liked hearing that.”
Johnson’s other visit this fall was in September for North Carolina’s game against Louisville. He took a few notes about the Tar Heels that have stuck with him.
