Head Coach Salaries and Athletic Department Revenue: Hokies About Where You Would Expect

The USA Today released its updated database of NCAA football coaches salaries yesterday.  Justin Fuente ranks No. 33 in the country, which is about where you would expect him to rank when you consider where the Hokies rank in total athletic revenue.

Revenue vs. Salary

Let’s take a look at each ACC public school and see how they are paying their head football coach in comparison to total athletic revenue.  Note that these numbers are slightly flawed, as the salaries are for the 2017 season, whereas the revenue numbers come from the 2015-16 fiscal year.  Still, I think you’ll get my overall point once you see the numbers.

Florida State: No. 18 in revenue, No. 6 in head coach salary, plus-12 difference
Louisville: No. 21 in revenue, No. 21 in head coach salary, no difference
Clemson: No. 27 in revenue, No. 2 in head coach salary, plus-25 difference
Virginia: No. 28 in revenue, No. 30 in head coach salary, minus-2 difference
North Carolina: No. 33 in
