Orange (NJ) 2019 four-star cornerback Nyquee Hawkins has heard the same sales pitches from the same coaches. Some of them have been helpful and have played a part in where he’s taken visits. It’s the way a few schools have talked to him, however, that have made them stand out in Hawkins’ mind.
Hawkins, No. 172 in the 2019 Rivals250, has over a dozen offers, including Virginia Tech, Michigan, Penn State and West Virginia. Many of them, though, have had similar messages.
Three weeks ago, a pair of schools gave Hawkins a different way to see how they viewed him. That came on Sept. 1, the first day of the open contact period for the 2019 class.
“Virginia Tech was first to hit me up,” Hawkins said. “Coach (Justin) Fuente and Coach (Brian) Mitchell hit me up. They just were talking with me. It did make a difference that they were first. When you’re a junior, you can see who is really interested and who just offered. That actually caught my eye.”
Hawkins has only seen the Hokies once in person, in July for their Blacksburg Bash barbecue. That visit, however, stood out for a few reasons. It gave him a chance to catch up with Mitchell, his primary recruiter, as well as defensive coordinator Bud Foster.
“I loved it overall, Coach Foster, Coach Mitchell, and just the whole staff,” Hawkins said. “I went around the campus, too, and it was nice. It was amazing and we got to play games with coaches like pool and just bond. I liked it. It wasn’t just all talking. It was actually a family thing and people coming together. Coaches got to know you and that was cool.”
