Virginia Tech has five scholarship tight ends on their roster, and all are different types of players. One of the most interesting things about watching the Hokies this year will be seeing how they use their assortment of tight ends.

Last season, Tech didn’t use the traditional tight end very much at all. Instead, they opted for multiple wide receivers, and they also used two-back sets with Sam Rogers or Steven Peoples in an H-back role. Towards the end of the year, they began using Colt Pettit as a blocking specialist at tight end as well.

I expect we’ll see both of those things this season. The Hokies will have an H-back again this year, but he will be a little bit different than Sam Rogers. Pettit could once again be used as a blocking specialist. And of course, there’s the threat of Chris Cunningham on the goal line. Let’s start with that last one.
