Drake Thomas knows linebacker is his position, but he shows enough versatility to play multiple linebacker spots. Thomas, a rising junior at Heritage High School in Wake Forest, N.C., has played predominantly at inside linebacker, but one college coach told Thomas that he could be used a few different ways in college.
Overall, there are 13 offers in for Thomas, most recently from West Virginia and Wake Forest. He also took a few visits this summer, including one two weekends ago that has helped give him a better idea of what he’s looking for in his recruitment.
“I think the most important thing is academics,” Thomas said. “But also, a place that has great culture, a great program and great people.”
On July 22, Thomas was at Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg Bash barbecue. The visit marked his first time to see Virginia Tech in person and the Hokies resonated in a big way with him.
“I liked it a lot,” Thomas said. “It was a family feel. They stress family up there. But I got to tour the facilities, talk to the academic people. We got to shoot basketball in the gym, which was cool. I got to meet all the coaches in person for the first time, too, so I really liked it.”
Thomas said he also spoke in-depth with Defensive Coordinator Bud Foster, who’s been his primary contact. Foster made a point of telling Thomas his versatility could come in handy for Virginia Tech.
