Rico Kearney is a Jacksonville, FL native who was originally committed to the Miami Hurricanes.  However, the Hokies never stopped recruiting him, and they never stopped building a relationship with him.  After visiting, he decided he felt more comfortable in Blacksburg than with the new coaching staff at Miami (he had originally committed to Al Golden’s staff).  Kearney went to Mandarin High School, where several NFL players have come out of, including Sam Cowart, Tony Carter and Fred Weary.

Kearney is a good prospect who played both inside linebacker and outside linebacker in high school.  His scouting report on ESPN says this: “Good player that may need to be in a 4-2-5 scheme to maximize strengths.”  If that’s the case, then Kearney couldn’t have made a better choice.

Let’s take a look at his senior highlights…

Here are some of the things I like about Kearney…

Acceleration: I don’t know what kind of a 40 time Kearney has, but he gets from Point A to Point B very quickly in the box.

Blitz timing: Kearney seems to have a knack for timing up his blitzes.  Combine that with his acceleration, and I could see him becoming a very effective blitzer
