Virginia Tech athletics is on a roll.  The men’s soccer team advanced to the Elite Eight.  The wrestling team is ranked No. 6 in the country.  The women’s basketball team is 13-0.  The football team just pulled off the biggest comeback in school history.  Meanwhile, the men’s basketball team is 12-1 and about to enter the polls after an 89-75 thrashing of No. 5 Duke on Saturday.

It’s a great time to be a Hokie fan.  Under Whit Babcock, this athletic department is in the middle of what could end up being the best year in its history.  The Hokies have improved in the Directors Cup standings since joining the ACC, but with the way things are going right now, they could be poised for their highest finish in school history.  Last year Tech got no points from either one of their basketball programs.  If both teams make the NCAA Tournament this year, that could potentially give the Hokies a big boost.

On this date 21 years ago, the Hokie Nation was flying back from New Orleans and reveling in a 28-10 victory over Texas in the Sugar Bowl.  The men’s basketball team was nationally ranked and would spend parts of the season in the Top 10.  Sports Illustrated ran an article on the rise of the Virginia Tech athletic department.  AshburnFarmHokie posted the main page of the article on the message boards this morning, with Ace Custis as the subject.
