Linebacker play was arguably the weak spot in Virginia Tech’s defense in 2015, and it’s the biggest question mark on that side of the ball heading into 2015 as well.

At the Mike spot, Andrew Motuapuaka returns as the starter.  Will he improve upon a subpar 2015 performance?  Tremaine Edmunds replaces Deon Clarke at Backer.  Edmunds has a high ceiling, but how long will it take him to turn that potential into solid production on the field?  Anthony Shegog should play well at Whip, but how often will the whip spot be used?

Besides those key questions, there are potential depth issues at all three positions.  Let’s start off with the Mike spot.

Virginia Tech Needs Improved Play at Mike

No depth chart has been released yet, but here are the players we either know are working at Mike, or we suspect are playing there…

#54 Andrew Motuapuaka (6-0, 233, r-Jr.)
#56 Sean Huelskamp (6-1, 222, r-Jr.)
#30 Eron Carter (6-1, 231, Fr.)
#53 Trent Young (5-10, 214, r-So.)

Two of those players are walk-ons, one is a true freshman, and the other did not have a particularly good season in 2015.  It’s easy to see why there is plenty of
