Virginia Tech’s Future Schedules Could Be Forced To Change

Following the conference realignment wars of the last 13 years has been a lot of fun. Tech fans in particular know that it’s a roller coaster. We experienced the terrible feeling of believing VT was going to be left out, to the exuberant feeling of being one of two schools invited to join the ACC in the summer of 2003. All that happened in the span of just a few months.

It seems like a long time ago, but I still remember the feeling when it seemed as if the Hokies were going to get left in a depleted Big East to wither on the vine. The South Endzone had been expanded, and work was set to begin on West Side renovations. Tech was pouring a ton of money into the program, and they had played for the National Championship just a few years before, yet the future was murky. I was pretty scared.

Fortunately everything worked out. Conferences seem to be pretty stable, with the possible exception of the Big 12. These days conference realignment talk has mostly given way to talks of TV contracts, streaming services, etc. Nobody knows what’s going to happen, but it’s clear that the ACC and ESPN are working on something behind the scenes.
