In an interesting move that a lot of people didn’t see coming, Buzz Williams signed 2016 guard Tyrie Jackson on Monday. The Hokies have been linked to plenty of players over the last couple of months, but Jackson’s name was one that did not surface until recently.
Jackson is very much unknown as a prospect. He’s listed anywhere from 6-0, 180 to 6-1, 210. Obviously there’s a big difference between 180 and 210, so which is it? I’m not sure, but he looks closer to 210 than 180 in his highlight video.
I reached out to a scout on Monday for a report on Jackson. Here’s the run down…
1: The scout likes him, but does not love him.
2: He’s a lead guard, not really a point guard or a shooting guard.
3: A so-so outside shooter.
4: Needs to be more vocal.
5: Competes well.
6: Could add some more strength.
In short, his game has to be refined. He won’t be able to push people around and get to the basket quite as well at the college level, so he’ll need to improve his shot. However, the fact that his strength is driving to the basket makes him a very good fit for a Buzz Williams offense. Though many schools might view him as a mediocre recruit, because his #1 strength matches up with what Buzz likes to do, he has the potential to be much better than a mediocre player for the Hokies.
