Scholarship offers continue to come in for Highland Springs (VA) junior Mekhi Becton. The 6’7”, 300-pound offensive tackle landed four new offers – Virginia Tech, Temple, Penn State, and, yesterday, Southern Cal – within the past two weeks, and now he claims 23 offers in total.
Of the Virginia Tech offer, Becton, reached via Twitter direct message, wrote: “I was truly blessed and excited and they stand close to the top (of his list).”
Becton has now been offered by both in-state ACC programs. Outside of the state, in addition to Penn State and Southern Cal the star junior boasts offers from Louisville, Maryland, Michigan State, North Carolina, NC State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Wake Forest and West Virginia, among others.
Becton attended camps at Virginia and Virginia Tech last summer, and he has taken unofficial visits to Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Pitt and Wake Forest. He mentioned Virginia Tech standing “close to the top” of his list but said he does not have a clear favorite at this time. UVA, Becton wrote, stands “close to the top also.”
The Springers star is impressed with the new coaching staffs in Charlottesville and Blacksburg. He has spoken with offensive line coaches Garett Tujague (UVA) and Vance Vice (VT). Asked about his relationship with those coaches, Becton answered: “I have a good relationship with both but I’m closer with [coach Tujague].”
Recruiting-wise, Becton says he has no further visits lined up yet for this spring and summer. As for a decision, he says he wants to commit “during my senior season.”
Becton’s size is certainly impressive and legit. At the Rivals Camp in Charlotte last month, the 3-star standout showed he can compete against top defensive line prospects.
“I felt like I proved myself,” Becton wrote about the Rivals experience. “My strengths are my punt and length of my arms.”
