Chris Horne has released his early top 15 in the state of Virginia for the 2017 recruiting class. Here’s a link, plus you can find it in our FB RECRUITING menu. It’s still extremely early, but this afternoon we’ll try to paint a clear picture of where the Hokies stand with each of those guys.

#1 Darnell Ewell, DT, Lake Taylor (Norfolk)

Ewell currently holds scholarship offers from Clemson, Ohio State, Tennessee, Penn State, etc. He likes the Hokies, and he visited in September for the Ohio State game. However, Tech’s recent history at Lake Taylor hasn’t been good.

Wayne Davis: Ohio State
Jalyn Holmes: Ohio State
Travis Williams: Miami
Jay Smith: NC State

It’s true that the Hokies haven’t offered a ton of Lake Taylor recruits in recent years, but it’s also true that their success rate in that time span has been 0%. They had a great chance to land Wayne Davis this past year, but Torrian Gray chose not to pursue him. That’s going to turn out to be a mistake, because it would have put Tech in a better position with Ewell.

As it stands, I think Tech’s chances of signing Ewell are very low. He will likely end up at Ohio State, where he has two former teammates.
