Yesterday we discussed how the Hokies have major needs at wide receiver and on the offensive line. They have just as many needs on the defensive side of the ball, if not more.

Defensive End

Commits: Jimmie Taylor IV

Targets: JaQuan Bailey

Virginia Tech offered at least 15 defensive ends in the 2016 class, but they missed out on all of them with the exception of Jimmie Taylor IV. While it’s common for the Hokies to lose ends to Florida State and Clemson, it’s not common for them to lose in-state defensive ends to the likes of Pitt. That’s what happened this year with Patrick Jones II, however.

The Hokies want to add another defensive end in this class, but there aren’t many available. JaQuan Bailey is the only target, and it appears he’ll come down to Virginia Tech and Tennessee. I don’t like VT’s chances right now. Bailey visited Tennessee last weekend and loved it. He is scheduled to take his Tech visit this weekend, but will he be able to make it because of the weather? Even if he does make the trip, will visiting during a blizzard actually help Tech’s chances?

Bailey could potentially reschedule his visit to January 29, but he is already scheduled to visit Iowa State on that date.

Defensive Tackle

Commits: Clay Dean

Targets: Jarrod Hewitt

Virginia Tech is looking to add another defensive tackle to the 2016 class. Former Rutgers commit Jarrod Hewitt, of Venice, FL, is the top (and only) target on the board. Virginia Tech and Iowa State are the only two schools in play at this point.
