Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) wide receiver/defensive back Phillip Patterson announced over the weekend that he was reopening his recruitment. Reached via Twitter, the 6’2”, 185-pound senior answered whether or not he is still considering Virginia Tech, the school he verbally committed to on August 1 earlier this year.
“I am definitely still considering VT,” Patterson answered.
Virginia Tech assistant coaches and athletic director Whit Babcock contacted the 3-star standout following the news of Frank Beamer’s retirement.
“Virginia Tech’s coaches basically told me they would get a good coach in there and everything would be all right,” Patterson wrote in a Twitter direct message. “[Babcock] basically told me everything the coaches told me.”
North Carolina, Old Dominion, Penn State, Wake Forest and West Virginia coaches have been in contact with Patterson this month. All except for West Virginia offered prior to his initial commitment to the Hokies.
As of this writing, Patterson has not scheduled any visits. He adds, “I don’t have a date right now of when I’ll commit.”
Asked where Virginia Tech stands on his list, Patterson replied: “I don’t have a list yet.”
Patterson capped off an impressive regular season with a 2-touchdown performance in a win over Princess Anne. He’ll now lead the Marlins into the 6A South playoffs and a first round matchup at Cox High School this Friday night.
“We’re looking good,” Patterson wrote about his team, which finished the regular season with a 7-3 record. “We should make a run for it.”
