Sense of Urgency and Personnel Changes Lead to Tech’s Win Over NC State

Frank Beamer wasn’t happy after his team’s loss to Pitt. He let it be known publicly that he didn’t think they played with emotion, he blamed himself for it in front of the media, and he vowed to fix it. That’s exactly what he did on Friday night.

Beamer’s comments after the Pitt loss were a little different than usual. Normally he goes all in with his praise for the other team. Sometimes he takes it overboard. After the ECU loss, he went out of his way to praise the Pirate team, coaching staff and program. Even on Tech Talk Live, when he got a question about what the Hokies needed to do better, he immediately started talking up ECU (who is now 3-3, by the way).

After Pitt, he barely even mentioned the Panthers. He was a bit salty in front of the camera, he took personal responsibility, and in general displayed the look of a guy who was not a happy camper.

He took it even further in practice this past week. When I got out of my car in Lot 1 last Tuesday to do interviews, I could hear him yelling through a megaphone at the offense: “Run it again! Run it again! Get it right this time!” That made my ears perk up, because Beamer is generally a hands off coach, with the exception of special teams of course. He generally just stands around and watches, to be perfectly blunt. However, he made it a point to get more personally involved this past week. He coached with a sense of urgency, and that’s how his team played. Here’s the post I had on the subscribers board on the subject immediately following the game.
