Several true freshmen are poised to help Virginia Tech on the football field this year. A couple of others are still being evaluated. Today we’ll give you a quick update on all of Tech’s true freshmen, and their chances for playing time this season.
QB Dwayne Lawson, 6-6, 222: The coaches have a decision to make with Lawson, and they aren’t ready to make it yet. That’s probably the right call. It’s a big decision, and they don’t need to make it until they are absolutely sure. Still, there’s no guarantee of being absolutely sure. We’ll only know whether or not it was the right decision to redshirt or play Lawson with the benefit of hindsight.
Personally, I’d redshirt him, but I’d keep him with the regular offense so he can keep learning the offense with Michael Brewer and the rest of the quarterbacks under Scot Loeffler. Sending him to the scout team won’t prepare him for possibly being the starter next season. Fortunately I don’t think the coaches are considering that at all.
I’m okay with whatever they decide. I know this is a very tough decision.
