The Hokies held their second open scrimmage of August on Saturday, and it was highlighted by several long runs by Tech tailbacks.

Note that some of the #1 guys didn’t play today.  Kendall Fuller was out and had his knee wrapped, though it’s nothing serious.  Isaiah Ford and Cam Phillips didn’t scrimmage, probably for two reasons…

1: The staff wanted their backups to get a lot of work with the #1 offense.
2: If Ford or Phillips gets hurt, we’re in trouble.

Again, the most productive backup was diminutive walkon r-freshman CJ Carroll.  He had at least two catches, and turned one into a long gain over the middle.  He got roughed up at the end by Deon Clarke, and both guys almost came to blows after the play.  I like that kind of spark from a guy like Carroll.  He’s the smallest guy on the field, which means he has to be the toughest if he wants to find success.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t a productive day for the other receivers.  Demitri Knowles caught a short pass, but didn’t do anything else.  Kevin Asante struggled.  He dropped a perfectly thrown out from Michael Brewer, and he also couldn’t quite haul in an over-the-shoulder TD pass from Brewer.  The ball was well-placed…Asante just couldn’t bring it in.

I can’t watch practice on a day to day basis,
