Today we’ll continue our scouting report series by taking a closer look at North Carolina defensive end Houshun Gaines.

For the simple fact that he’s a defensive end, Houshun Gaines is one of Virginia Tech’s most important recruits of the 2015 class. Gaines originally committed to Florida, or at least he thought he did, as the Florida staff informed him that he didn’t have an offer. With his recruitment back open, he eventually settled on Virginia Tech. Gaines also had listed scholarship offers from Miami, NC State, UVA, Vanderbilt, and a few others.
Personally, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Gaines before his senior season. Then his senior film came out and it showed a much improved football player and a guy who had physically matured. I think Charley Wiles and the Tech defensive staff showed great ability to project future development when they offered Gaines a scholarship before his senior season.
