Hokies moving away from FCS opponents and towards the Power 5

Tech has moved some future games around and scheduled a new series with Rutgers. However, the most important part of Tech’s future non-conference schedule is that it will feature more Power 5 teams. It also appears Whit Babcock is trying to cut out FCS opponents completely.

Note that this move was begun by Jim Weaver, and has been continued by Babcock since his arrival 11 months ago.

More home-and-home games against Power 5 programs

Notre Dame was placed on Tech’s schedule in 2019, giving the Hokies seven road games that year. Changes had to be made, because any AD always wants either six or seven home games in a season.

Tech was scheduled to play at Wisconsin in 2019 and to host the Badgers in 2020. Unfortunately, those games had to be pushed back yet again. Tech will now play in Madison in 2024, and they will host the Badgers in 2025.

The series with Penn State has also been rearranged. The home game has been pushed up from 2022 to 2020, and the road game has been pushed back two years from 2023 to 2025. Virginia Tech and Rutgers will also play a home-and-home, with Tech traveling to Rutgers in 2023 and the Scarlet Knights coming to Blacksburg in 2024.

Outside of Tech’s game against Ohio State next season, their home schedule for the next three years is disappointing. However, their road games and neutral site games in that
