Hopewell (VA) senior defensive end Darrell Taylor still considers himself solid in his commitment to Tennessee but acknowledged Virginia Tech has given him “something to think about.”

“I’m still considering Virginia Tech. I can say that,” Taylor said.

Taylor, who verbally committed to Tennessee this past September, was in Blacksburg this past weekend on an official visit.

“It gave me better comfort with the players. I talked with the players about a lot of things,” Taylor said, reflecting on the Virginia Tech official visit. “I’m more comfortable now with them than I had been at first.”

Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer is still recovering from throat surgery and therefore was not on hand to meet with Taylor. Still, the rest of the Tech staff made the Hopewell star feel like a priority.

“I talked with the defensive coaching staff and [primary recruiter] Shane Beamer. Everything with them is going pretty well. We had a good conversation going on the defensive scheme and how they would use me. I had a great time on the visit. I’m hearing some good things from them,” Taylor said.

“I’m still considering Tech. I’m still with Tennessee but I am still considering Virginia Tech.”

The coaches expressed to Taylor how much they need defensive ends in the class of 2015.

“Their need for defensive ends is really important,” said Taylor, who says he “feels ready” to come in and play early on the major college level.

A Dead Period is now in effect through January 14, meaning recruits will now have to wait until next year to make official visits. Taylor says he would like to take a few more officials, listing Miami and Ohio State as possibilities.
