The Run of the Bull
A native of Mobile, Alabama, Bill Dooley was an old-school coach with a southern drawl. Virginia Tech’s media guide billed him as a “trench fighter” for his days as an acclaimed offensive lineman at Mississippi State. By the time his run at Tech was done, his players had dubbed him with a classic nickname.
“His name was the Bull. ‘Bull’ Dooley,” said Cyrus Lawrence, Virginia Tech’s career rushing leader. “He was the one who set the program in order. His recruitment style was outstanding. He brought in guys like Bruce Smith, Tony Paige, Mike Johnson, Robert Brown, Ashley Lee, Jesse Penn. Guys who went on to play in the NFL.”
But that first year, many his players called the Bull something entirely...
