By my count, at least 10 true freshmen will play for Virginia Tech this season.
Quarterback
According to Scot Loeffler, Andrew Ford has made massive improvements since the spring. That’s exciting, because in one spring scrimmage Ford went 12-of-15 for 150 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He also had a sure touchdown from about 40 yards out dropped during that scrimmage.
Overall, I thought Ford was the most advanced passer as a true freshman that I’ve ever seen at Virginia Tech. He’s still not quite ready, but fortunately he can redshirt this year. Yet again, let me say this: even if Michael Brewer never plays a down, his presence allows Andrew Ford to redshirt. With Brenden Motley’s back injury, Ford would be the #2 quarterback behind Mark Leal if Brewer had not transferred to Tech.
Chris Durkin has gotten reps as a wildcat quarterback, and he has also spent time in a green jersey because of a banged up ankle. I’ve not in favor of playing Durkin only to run 3-4 wildcat plays every game. I really hope they redshirt him.
