Jay Payton received some good news on the academic front last week, when he received an ACT score he believes gets him academically qualified. Payton, a 6’2″, 235-pound linebacker prospect who just finished up postgraduate work at Atlanta Sports Academy (Atlanta, GA), is now awaiting word from the NCAA Clearinghouse regarding his academic status (he plans to check in this week). The athletic prospect is also awaiting word on a possible scholarship offer from Virginia Tech, which is his favorite school.
“[Virginia Tech defensive backs coach Torrian] Gray told me that they would dedicate [today] to a film session on me. The whole coaching staff will sit down and watch my film [from this season at Atlanta Sports Academy],” said Payton, who was at Tech on an unofficial visit this past Saturday.
“I had a chance to talk with Bud Foster after the Maryland game. He said that basically the highlight package will sell itself. If they like what they saw, I would get an offer.”
What happens if Frank Beamer gives the go ahead for a scholarship offer?
“If they offer, I don’t plan on waiting. I’m trying to enroll in January. If they offer I can’t wait. I would commit and then get ready for January,” answered Payton, who graduated from Archbishop Carroll (Washington, D.C.) in the spring of 2013 before heading to ASA for postgraduate work.
Payton says he has some options if Virginia Tech does not come through with an offer. He claims scholarship offers from UVa, Georgia State, and Southern Illinois. He keeps in contact with coaches from Old Dominion and Tennessee...
