Offensive Line Thoughts

We’ve seen Jeff Grimes change his offensive line depth chart each day, as promised.  On Monday, it looked like this:

LT: McLaughlin
LG: Benedict
C: Farris
RG: Miller
RT: Gibson

Brent Benedict

On Tuesday, this was how it shook out:

LT: Shuman
LG: Farris
C: Wang
RG: Miller
RT: Gibson

Today, it looks like this:

LT: McLaughlin
LG: Benedict
C: Wang
RG: Miller
RT: Gibson

The only thing that has stayed the same all three days is the right side, where Andrew Miller and Laurence Gibson have been #1 at right guard and right tackle respectively.

It’s impossible to tell how the offensive line will shake out, though I’d bet good money on Laurence Gibson starting at right tackle.  I’d also be surprised if Jonathan McLaughlin wasn’t starting at left tackle.  I’m a little worried about the situation on the interior, however.

I like Caleb Farris (6-3, 308, Jr.) as a football player, but as I’ve said, I’m not sure he moves well enough laterally to excel in Virginia Tech’s current scheme.  There’s no shame in that.  Sergio Render was a very good lineman for the Hokies, but he would struggle in this current scheme for sure.  When I watched the Spring Game film, Farris had a tough time with Devin Vandyke blitzing through the A-gap.
