Virginia Tech is the choice, Stonewall Jackson (Manassas, VA) star athlete Greg Stroman revealed during a 2 pm press conference in his high school’s auditorium. Sticking to his humble and soft-spoken nature, Stroman simply walked over to the press conference table, picked up the Virginia Tech hat (which was placed beside Duke and UVa hats), and put it on to show everyone in the room where he would attend college.
Virginia Tech, UVa, and Duke were the finalists for the 6’0″, 165-pound rising senior, who also considered offers from Old Dominion, Wisconsin, U-Mass and others. The decision was a tough one.
“Basically the last couple days and hours is what it came down to,” Stroman said of his decision. He did not inform the coaches of the three finalists before he made his announcement.
Stroman’s father, Greg Sr., said: “It was tight. All the schools, they showed great love to us. The difference maker probably was the actual position coach (Torrian Gray). The position coach, and then the tradition up at Tech. It’s family oriented, so we just kind of wanted to be a part of that.”
Stonewall Jackson head coach Mike Dougherty had no idea which way his star would go.
“I didn’t know til he picked up that hat which one he was going with,” Dougherty said. “The other day it was another one that was in the lead. Last week it was another one that was in the lead. So it truly was a three-way tie coming in. I don’t know what he quoted as saying why he ultimately decided, but in my opinion it was the national stage factor and the NFL potential. I think Greg’s an NFL player. He has got to get bigger, but he has got the athleticism, the speed, and the instincts of guys that play on Sunday.”
