Woodland (Dorchester, S.C.) defensive end Michael Barnett , Jr., easily passes the eye test as a top flight recruit. The 6’7″ rising junior is a lean and solid 225 pounds. The lengthy and athletic prospect was at Virginia Tech this past weekend, first participating in the one-day camp and then staying for the Prospect Day recruiting event on Sunday.
Describing the camp experience, Barnett said: “I really like the experience and interacting with the coaches more as far as what they want me to do in drills and stuff. I really liked it a lot.”
Barnett enjoyed the experience on Sunday as well.
“I got to tour the campus, try on jerseys and stuff. I got to see the locker room and they showed us a motivational film. The coaches told us about themselves… it was pretty cool,” Barnett said.
Clemson, Florida, Florida State, N.C. State and Virginia Tech have verbally offered Barnett, who is rated a 4-star prospect by ESPN.com and 247Sports.com. The Hokies were the first to come through.
“It was about three weeks after [the 2012] football season,” Barnett recalled. “I went straight into basketball. One day I saw Coach Wiles talking with our defensive coordinator. That’s when said they were offering. I didn’t know what to think. My coach didn’t even know what to think.”
Barnett reciprocated the interest by making a trip to Tech for the 2013 Spring Game. The Palmetto State standout claims there is no real list of favorites at this point, but he did indicate that Tech is a very serious contender.
“I don’t really have a standing, but I’m really considering going [to Virginia Tech],” he said.
In addition to Tech, Barnett has visited Clemson, Florida and Florida State. He plans to return to Clemson today...
