Strategy Session: July 13 Camp

Virginia Tech’s football program has landed 10 more prospects in the Class of 2014 since our last “Strategy Session” back in the Spring.  Tech now has 14 commitments in total and, with the exception of a few prospects that may wait to commit, the class should be mostly finished by the of the summer.

Below I’ll break down the projected scholarship situation for Virginia Tech in the 2014 season and take a look at tomorrow’s important one-day camp, but in the meantime here are some recent recruiting notes.

– The below scholarship breakdown does not include Class of 2012 signees Drew Harris and Thomas Smith .  Harris is in junior college, and Virginia Tech has a history of not taking junior college athletes.  The talented running back is likely to end up elsewhere once he completes junior college, but regardless he won’t be at Tech this fall.  Smith apparently has fallen short of gaining admission to Virginia Tech.  The former Lafayette (Williamsburg, VA) wideout was hoping to enroll in May.  Where he will go from here is unclear.

– Class of 2013 signee Holland Fisher will head to Fork Union this fall to begin postgraduate work.  I expect he will have to stay a full year, but at this point I haven’t confirmed his definite plans.  Class of 2013 signees Cequan Jefferson , Andrew Motu’apuaka , and DJ Reid are not enrolled at VT either.  Thomas Dale (Chester, VA) head coach Kevin Tucker had no comment on Reid’s situation, but I think it’s a real possibility that all three players may have to head to Fork Union, at least for a semester.

Vinny Mihota at VT’s camp in June of 2013

– Massaponax (Fredericksburg, VA) rising senior defensive end Vinny Mihota has decided to graduate from high school in December and enroll at Tech this coming January.

– In case you missed it, Virginia Tech is out of the running for 5-star defensive end Da’Shawn Hand , whose final five includes Alabama, Florida, LSU, Michigan, and Southern Cal.  Hand’s elimination of the Hokies was indeed surprising.  Also, 5-star defensive tackle Andrew Brown pledged to UVa over VT, Alabama, Clemson, and Florida State.  The Hokies will host two top Class of 2014 defensive line targets tomorrow, though.

– VT had been on a roll in offensive line recruiting, most recently landing Colt Pettit , an offensive guard out of Patrick Henry in Deshler, Ohio.  Tech has four offensive line commitments in total, and it’s a good chance all four end up on the interior line.  One week ago today, the Hokies made the final five for a top offensive tackle target in Brady Taylor of Bishop Ready (Columbus, OH).  Kentucky, Ohio State, Pitt and West Virginia round out Taylor’s top five.

Taylor has offers from four of his five finalists with Ohio State being the exception. If the Buckeyes offer, they could be tough to beat.

2014 Season Roster Breakdown (Scholarship Players Only) and Analysis

Note:  The below roster includes all of those players currently enrolled and projected to be on scholarship in the 2014 season.  Also included are four Class of 2013 signees — Holland Fisher , Cequan Jefferson , Andrew Motu’apuaka , and DJ Reid — not currently enrolled.  Fisher is definitely headed to Fork Union, while the futures of the other three are not yet certain.
