In-state junior wide receivers Donovan Dowling and B.J. Farrow both seem likely to land scholarship levels on some level. Major FBS offers are not out of the question for either player, and both players — Dowling for Varina and Farrow for Liberty Christian Academy — have demonstrated their talents early in this season.
Donovan Dowling flashed his talent in last year’s playoffs, turning in a 9-catch performance in Varina’s 21-16 loss to L.C. Bird in the Group AAA, Division 6 Central Region semifinals. Dowling, now a 6’0″, 205-pound junior, has become a major weapon for Stu Brown’s 2012 Blue Devils squad.
Dowling hauled in a 31-yard touchdown catch in Varina’s 14-7 season opening victory over Dinwiddie. He followed that up with a 2-touchdown performance in last week’s route of Thomas Dale.
“He had a catch the other night (against Thomas Dale) where a guy was hanging all over him and he caught the ball with only one hand,” Brown said.
Brown continued: “He’s a big, physical receiver. The thing with Donnie is he attacks the ball at its highest point. That’s one of his biggest strengths. I think it comes from playing basketball. He’s a pretty good basketball player, and he just has the timing to go and get the ball. He consistently attacks the ball. He also punishes in the running game. He plays angry at receiver. He looks for people to hit.”
Speaking to Dowling’s toughness is the fact that he was called upon to block a defensive end earlier this season. The Varina junior is a tough, physical player with good hands and outstanding leaping ability. Speed is one question mark that could prevent him from earning major college offers… at least until he gets out to camps next summer.
“He’s 6’0″, 205 pounds, and I think college coaches want to get him to camps,” Brown said. “He can run, but he hasn’t shown that in his 40 time. He ran a 4.7 this summer, but that was from a 2-point stance. It’s not like he can’t run. He’ll get that time down. When he has broken away, nobody has caught him.”
The in-state ACC schools are very aware of Dowling, but...
