James Johnson was officially named the Virginia Tech head men’s basketball coach on Tuesday afternoon. Here are a few thoughts on his hiring.
What We Know (or Think We Know)
Here’s what we know about James Johnson:
He’s liked by his players. Johnson has been a very popular staff member since he arrived in Blacksburg back in 2007. The current (and former) players seem very excited by his hiring, if you believe what they say on Twitter.
Erick Green : “Yessss I’ll be back next year”
Cadarian Raines : “throwing a party tonight”
Cadarian Raines : “It’s a great day to be a hokie”
Jarell Eddie: “That makes me feel a lot better.”
C.J. Barksdale : “Congrats To JJ becoming Head Coach..I’m hype lol He deserves it though”
Malcolm Delaney: “VTECH hired my guy JJ.. he finally will get his chance”
I don’t think a guy can get the most out of his coaching abilities unless he has players who want to play for him. That’s not a problem for Johnson. The Tech players really like him, and they apparently don’t have any issues with his coaching abilities or playing for him.
He’s a good recruiter. James Johnson is used to recruiting the state of Virginia from his days at ODU, George Mason and Virginia Tech.
