2013 Season Roster Breakdown

The total number of players projected on scholarship in the 2013 season now stands at 75, but it could grow to 76 if Cody Journell is reinstated.  February’s projection was 81.

Attrition has struck since February, and four players are no longer on the roster.  They are: Telvion Clark (dismissed from team), James Farrow (transfer), James Hopper (injury) and Dominique Patterson (transfer).  There has also been some position shuffling with current players, leaving the scholarship breakdown by position for the 2013 season looking as follows:

Quarterbacks – 3
Running Backs – 6
Wide Receivers – 9
Tight End – 5
Centers – 2
Offensive Guards – 5
Offensive Tackles – 5
Defensive Ends – 10
Defensive Tackles – 7
Linebackers – 11
Cornerbacks – 4
Safeties – 7
Place-kickers/Punters – 1 or 2 (depending on Cody Journell’s status)

(editor’s note: offensive guard Kory Gough is not listed on the roster on HokieSports.com.  However, there has been no official announcement of his playing status.  I didn’t include him on the list of 2013 players, but he definitely could be back.)

In his Notebook Plus column last week, Doug Doughty wrote that Virginia Tech “could sign as few as 16 players in 2013 and don’t think they’ll go over 20.”  That’s slightly above our initial projection, which was 13-15.  Of course the final number is always fluid, but it seems very unlikely that the Hokies will be close to a full class this year.

Virginia Tech has primarily addressed the defense with its first four commitments.  They are:  Holland Fisher (likely ROV/WLB), Cequan Jefferson (CB), David Prince (likely WR) and Anthony Shegog (ROV/FS).
