Sean Tobin does not currently have a scholarship offer from Virginia Tech, but he does have an official visit scheduled and is hopeful an offer will come. Tobin, a 6-3, 220-pound long-snapper and linebacker prospect out of St. John Vianney High School (Holmdel, N.J.), caught the interest of the Hokies about a month ago.

“I sent them my highlight film through the mail,” recalled Tobin, who has scheduled an official visit to Tech the weekend of January 28. “Coach Cavanaugh called me a week or so after and said they really liked my film. He said they definitely are very interested. It just comes down to numbers [in terms of getting an offer].”

A 3-year starter on the varsity level, Tobin was his team’s defensive MVP in 2010. At linebacker, he racked up 80 tackles including eight sacks and had an interception. FCS schools are in pursuit of Tobin as a linebacker and long-snapper, while the major college programs — Virginia Tech included — are attracted by his talents on special teams.

“I don’t think I’d be getting big-time looks if it wasn’t for my long-snapping ability,” said Tobin, who has been long-snapping since he was seven years old.

“I practice daily. I take a lot of reps every single day. I’m doing everything I can to get to the next level.”

In addition to Virginia Tech, Tobin has drawn interest from Colorado State, Georgia Tech, and most recently North Carolina. He leaves today for an official visit to Georgia Tech, which is expressing the same sentiment as Virginia Tech as far as a scholarship offer is concerned. Tobin will visit Colorado State, the only FBS program to offer at this point, next weekend.

“They offered about two weeks ago, I’d say,” Tobin said, referring to Colorado State. “I’m really looking forward to my visit there. The assistant coach has been to my house twice. He sells the program well.”

Tobin, who is not interested in a recruited walk-on opportunity, discussed what he will be looking for on these official visits. Currently, he does not have a favorite as he awaits word on potential offers.

“I’m looking for that family atmosphere, to see where I fit in best with the people there,” Tobin said.
