Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) cornerback Demetrious “Trey” Nicholson, an Under Armour All-American and 2010 Gatorade Player of the Year in the state, is prepared to announce his college choice. According to Marlins head coach Darnell Moore, the 5-9, 165-pound senior will make the announcement on Wednesday afternoon.
“Trey will make his college choice known Wednesday at a 2:30 press conference at Bayside High school,” Moore wrote via e-mail.
Reached by telephone this afternoon, Moore indicated that Nicholson had gone back and forth in terms of the timing of the decision. The possibility of waiting until the new year and making more official visits remained until Monday morning.
“At one point he was going to wait,” Moore said. “He came in this morning and told me he was ready to do it.”
UNC led for most of this race, but Virginia has recently been the rumored favorite. Nicholson has taken official visits to Stanford and UVa. He has been to North Carolina and Virginia Tech unofficially several times. Those schools and Michigan make up the final five.
“Stanford, Michigan, [North] Carolina, UVa and possibly Virginia Tech [are the finalists],” said Moore, who admits he does not know what the choice will be.
Nicholson’s varsity football career began in 2007, when he started five games as a freshman. He played on both sides of the ball beginning his junior season, finishing 2009 with 33 receptions for 850 yards and 11 touchdowns and totaling eight interceptions.
Beach district Defensive Player of the Year in 2010, Nicholson had racked up 19 pass break-ups and two interceptions heading into the Group AAA, Division 6 state semifinal against Hermitage. On offense, Nicholson totaled 38 receptions for 598 yards and eight touchdowns in the 2010 season.
Despite his talents on offense, Nicholson is viewed as a shut-down corner on the college level.
