ESPN’s Dave Telep Talks Virginia Tech’s Class
In its 2011 class team rankings, ESPNU has Virginia Tech at #12 in the country and #3 in the ACC. All four players in this class — Norcom (Portsmouth, VA) forward Marquis Rankin (#95) — are ranked in the ESPNU Top 100.
ESPN.com Basketball Recruiting Analyst Dave Telep, formerly of Scout.com, commented on the class.
“There are two guys who are going to impact quickly. Dorian Finney-Smith is a guy who knows how to win. That intangible will follow him to Virginia Tech. He is prewired to be successful. Winning is important to him, and he’s also one of the most instinctive players in this class. The other guy, who looks like a Seth type of guy every day, is Rob Brown. He is a good athlete. He can score and he can shoot, but it has been about putting the pieces together. I think he is doing that.”
More on Finney-Smith
“Sometimes, summer basketball doesn’t lend itself to guys showing what they can do because it’s less structured. When Dorian is playing for his high school team, he is comfortable and he is comfortable with the leadership role. The run they had in the state tournament last year speaks volumes about Dorian. I expect very big things from him at Virginia Tech.”
More on Robert Brown
“Last fall and prior to this past summer, I felt like he kind of cruised. I talked to him this summer and he had a different edge about him and his game. To me, he raised his own bar of success and he is working to reach it.”
Coach Greenberg’s recruiting efforts
“He operates with a chip on his shoulder. That’s what has made him successful. He is a hands-on head coach in recruiting. He has built something a lot of people weren’t sure he could do, and a lot of that is from his own blood and sweat.”
