Vandyke Showing Strong In Return

Ronny Vandyke appears to have returned to form after missing the entire 2009 season due to a shoulder injury. When healthy, the 6-3, 200-pound senior is one of the state’s best 2011 class prospects, as evidenced by the fact that he received close to 10 FBS scholarship offers despite the lack of a junior season.

“I’m doing alright,” Vandyke said of his senior season performance. “My shoulder is doing good too. I’m making plays, doing well. It just sucks that the teams we play run away from my side of the field, but I’m still making my plays.”

Vandyke was active in South County’s last game, a 32-28 loss to Centreville. The Virginia Tech-bound recruit totaled 14 tackles including seven solo efforts. Vandyke starts at Whip linebacker, though against Centreville he played Rover to prevent the Wildcats from running away from his side of the field.

Whip is the position Vandyke feels he may be best suited for at Virginia Tech, though he could play Rover or perhaps free safety as well. He played safety as a sophomore at South County, so this year is his first extensive experience at Whip.
