Highly regarded forward Dorian Finney-Smith will announce his college choice on September 28, at a 1 p.m. press conference at Norcom High School (Portsmouth, VA). Before he does this, though, he will make official visits to his three finalists.
“I’m going to Virginia Tech on September 11, Florida on the 18 and ODU on the 25,” said Finney-Smith.
Finney-Smith claims all three finalists are “pretty even” prior to the official visits. There is nothing specific he is looking to see on these trips, hoping only for a “gut feel” about each place.
Virginia Tech hosted the 4-star standout on an unofficial visit earlier in the summer. Asked why the Hokies made the cut, Finney-Smith said, “I like the way they play. When I visited, I saw the facilities. The new practice facility is nice.”
Ben Finney, a rising senior forward at Old Dominion, provided his younger brother with some advice with respect to the recruiting process.
“He just said it’s my decision,” Finney-Smith said. “And that it’s the biggest decision of my life right now.”
While three schools await the final decision, Finney-Smith is busy preparing for his senior season. He guided Norcom to the Group AAA state championship title last season as a junior. He averaged 19 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and three steals per contest, receiving the honor of VHSCA Group AAA Player of the Year.
“I want to go out on a high note my senior year and hopefully win another state championship,” said Finney-Smith.
After playing the 2010 AAU circuit with Boo Williams, Finney-Smith is a more confident player in several areas.
“I wasn’t as good as a finisher before AAU season,” Finney-Smith said. “I also worked on my midrange jump shot. I feel good. I’m starting to shoot better midrange shots.”
