Anson (Wadesboro, N.C.) linebacker Stephone Anthony managed to narrow his list of schools to six before preseason practice, which began on Tuesday. The 6-3, 220-pound rising senior took some time to discuss his favorites and his plans for figuring out where he will spend the next four or five years.

“I trimmed my list down to six,” Anthony said. “I’ve got Florida, Virginia Tech, Clemson, UNC, Georgia and N.C. State.

“The next step is scheduling official visits and getting to the schools I want to see. I’m going to take an official visit to Florida, more than likely for the Kentucky game [on the weekend of September 25].”

Anthony admits that Florida “is still the school to beat,” though he does intend to take official visits to other schools before committing.

“I want to take an official visit Virginia Tech. I also want to get to Clemson and Georgia,” Anthony said.

This summer, Anthony made an unofficial visit to the University of Georgia. He had planned on a trip to Florida earlier this month, but he wasn’t able to make the trek. As for Virginia Tech, Anthony last visited Blacksburg for the Spring Game. He hasn’t ruled out an unofficial visit prior to an official, but nothing has been scheduled.

What is Anthony’s take on Tech?

“It’s a great program,” said Anthony. “Bud Foster is a great defensive coach. They have a great staff and I like the chemistry I have with the players.”

Without question, Anthony will be the leader of Anson’s 2010 squad. The standout prospect looks forward to the challenge.

“I’m looking forward to trying to help our team get back into the playoffs and make a run at a state championship,” said Anthony, who will start at middle linebacker and see action at running back. “I just want to win. So far, things are coming along pretty good. We lost a lot of guys from last year, but the young guys are learning.”
