Hokies Strengthen In-State Recruiting Foundation

If newspaper reports are accurate, Virginia Tech is expected to announce the
hiring of John Richardson as a new assistant men’s basketball coach sometime
soon. Richardson has a long history of basketball in the state of Virginia, and
he is a very good hire from a recruiting perspective.

For those of you who follow football recruiting, you know that Virginia Tech
has made a living off recruiting in-state players. On the hardwood, things
haven’t been the same. The Hokies’ best players from the ACC era have come from
out-of-state, while their ability to recruit in-state standouts has not been
strong.

While Tech has more recruits from Virginia than any other state, they haven’t
been impact signings. Seth Greenberg has gotten the majority of his players from
Virginia, Maryland, Florida, Georgia and North Carolina. Virginia is the only
one of those states to not produce a double-figure scorer for the Hokies.
