2009 Review: The Offense

Perhaps no unit in college football has taken more heat over the past several
seasons than Virginia Tech’s offense. Bryan Stinespring and the offense needed a
good year, and they got one. How good was it? Arguably the best of the
Stinespring era. The Hokies got improved production from nearly every position,
and the results were obvious on the field.

Virginia Tech was one of the top rushing teams in the nation, one of the most
efficient passing teams, and they managed to finish in the top half nationally
in total offense, just one year after not even cracking the top 100.

Virginia Tech’s offense can’t be judged on their total offense ranking. The
Hokies and Frank Beamer aren’t about putting up huge numbers. They are about a
strong running game, an efficient passing game and controlling the clock. That
worked out this year, as Tech was 16th nationally in the running game and 13th
in the nation in pass efficiency. Tech passed the eye test offensively, with
three notable games excepted. More on that later.
