You’ve spent the month of August learning about Virginia Tech’s football
team, but you might be curious as to what’s been happening in practice in
Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide have been preparing for this football game as hard
as Virginia Tech, and today we’ll bring you an Alabama update.

Alabama has had a bit of a flu outbreak this week, but the only starter that
has missed time is All-American noseguard Terrence Cody. The situation isn’t
expected to get serious, but it is worth monitoring.

The Crimson Tide began to transition from preseason practice to game
preparation for Virginia Tech on Thursday. Their practice schedule is pretty
similar to Virginia Tech’s. Both schools took Monday off because it was the
first day of class, and both have now begun to put in their game plan for the
September 5 matchup.

Alabama’s starting quarterback is r-junior Greg McElroy, but their backup
situation is very unsettled. Star Jackson, a r-freshman, and Thomas Darrah, a
r-sophomore, have gotten the second team reps during the month of August.
Jackson is a raw player who is athletic, while Darrah is a tall pocket passer.
A.J. McCarron is a true freshman who will likely redshirt.

Here’s a look at the quarterback stats for Alabama’s two scrimmages. It’s
important to remember that Alabama runs 150 or more plays during their
scrimmages. A typical Virginia Tech scrimmage consists of half that many plays.
