The Hokies received their 16th verbal commitment of the 2010 recruiting class when Brooke Point (Stafford, VA) wide receiver E.L. Smiling announced his decision on Tuesday. Smiling is the first wide receiver commit of the 2010 class.
Smiling is 6-4, 185 and he ran a 4.6 in the 40 at Tech’s most recent recruiting camp on July 11. As a junior in 2008, he caught 24 passes for 391 yards and five touchdowns.
Brooke Point head coach Jeff Berry had plenty of good things to say about Smiling.
“E.L. has unbelieveable upside,” Berry said. “He’s an unbelievable player right now. He’s going to be a game changer for us, but at the same time he’s not anywhere near his potential.”
Virginia Tech is known for building its program by getting recruits that weren’t quite considered national names on the recruiting scene. Smiling fits that profile.
“I believe they’re getting a steal,” Berry continued. “I told somebody else earlier that he’s the type of kid that Virginia Tech built their program on. They’ve always seemed to find those under the radar players. They get them in the program and develop them, and the next thing you know they turn out to be a great college player.”
Brooke Point has sent Isaiah Hamlette and Lanford Collins to Virginia Tech over the last two years, and now they’ll send their third player over a three year span. However, it was Tech’s winning ways that made the biggest impression on Smiling, not the fact that there are other Brooke Point players in Blacksburg.
“I don’t believe it had much of an affect on him,” Berry said. “Does it hurt the situation? No. They are the only team that offered him right off the bat. They play in a big BCS bowl game every year, they have a chance to compete for the national title every year, they offered him in January or February and they showed real faith in him. I think that’s what really attracted him.”
