Lake Taylor (Norfolk, VA) linebacker Travis Williams had planned on attending Virginia Tech’s July 11th camp along with rising senior teammate Mario Rowson. Rowson couldn’t make it, but the talented Titans star, rated #7 in TSL’s In-State Top 30, made the trip to Blacksburg anyway.

How was the overall experience?

“The trip was okay,” Williams said. “I still didn’t really get around to seeing the campus, but I did enjoy the restaurant I ate at. I ate with Zack McCray, Caleb Farris and his mother, and Nick Dew.”

Williams spent a lot of time with Virginia Tech’s coaches and players, something he seems to have enjoyed as well.

“The players were cool,” Williams said. “I knew them all just about. I either have played against them in conference or in a non-conference game. The coaches were real cool. Coach Beamer is cool. It was my first time seeing a head coach out there during camp. Coach Beamer was helping out a kicker. Coach Newsome is a real energetic guy. I surprised him by being there. He didn’t know I was coming. Coach Foster was cool, too.”

Defensive coordinator Bud Foster and head coach Frank Beamer met with Williams following the camp.

“Coach Bud told me he wanted to use me off the edge a lot,” said the 6-2, 200-pound Williams, who has potential as a Whip or a Rover in Foster’s defensive scheme. “Coach Beamer told me to do my grades first and then worry about college, because if I don’t have the grades I can’t make it.

“I liked them a lot. They are real cool cats.”

In terms of the college environment he is looking for, Williams admits he is a “city guy. I like to be around things. I didn’t get to see much of Tech, so I don’t know what to think. I only saw the campus in one area.”
