Williams Impressing Heading Into 2008 Season

On a Daniel (Central, S.C.) varsity football squad expected to compete for a state championship this season, 6-1, 185-pound Jerrodd Williams is one of the stars and one of the leaders. The Virginia Tech cornerback recruit, a speedster who has been timed in the 40 in sub-4.5 seconds, has shown very well in preseason practice and head coach Randy Robinson expects a big year from his star on both sides of the ball.

“Jerrodd is off to a great start,” said Robinson, whose team captured a region championship last season. The team kicks off its 2008 season on August 29th. “Team-wise, we have a bit of the injury bug. To be honest with you, we haven’t hit as much so we can get healthy.

“With Jerrodd, I think his confidence level is the highest I’ve seen it. He looks great at corner. We have started spotting him more on offense, too. We want to give him opportunities to get in space because he is such a great athlete with great speed. Character-wise, he is top notch. He’ll do whatever we need him to do.”

Very effective on special teams, Williams averaged 34 yards per kick-off return last season as a junior. This year, he is pushing for the starting punt-returner spot and continues to be one of Daniel’s top gunners on punts. Defense and special teams are the two areas Virginia Tech sees him contributing in on the next level.
