6-3, 280-pound defensive lineman recruit Antoine Hopkins has been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse and the former Highland Springs (VA) star says he will be in Blacksburg “by the end of July or early August” for preseason practice. TSL caught up with Hopkins for a “Q&A” to discuss his future at Virginia Tech.
Q&A with Antoine Hopkins
TSL: How does it feel knowing that you’ll be a college guy and will suit up for the Hokies in about one month’s time?
Antoine Hopkins : “I’m nervous. I’m excited. It’ll be good to finally compete again. I’m looking to grow mentally and physically and be a better player. I’m looking forward to practicing against better players.”
TSL: Obviously, there is a transition from playing against high school level competition to college level competition. Is there anything you are doing right now to prepare for that transition or is that just something you’ll deal with once you get there?
Antoine Hopkins : “I guess I’ll figure it out kind of once I get there. I’m trying to be as strong as I can be. I’m trying to get as fast as I can get. I’ve been told the speed will be different anyway. I’ve been asking around…some adjust to the speed in a few days. Others adjust in two weeks.”
TSL: The consensus seems to be that you could play end or tackle for the Hokies. Where do you think you will play when you first get to Tech?
