Status of the 2008 Football Recruiting Class

Virginia Tech’s 2008 recruiting class was quite impressive – in addition to
signing 16 of TSL’s in-state top 30, Tech’s class ranked 18th nationally by
Rivals.com – but a major question mark was just how many of Tech’s 30 signees
would suit up for the Hokies in the 2008 season. After all, a Division 1A
program may only enroll 25 players in a given class. Things have become
much clearer in the past month or so, but there are still some questions
lingering with respect to which recruits will enroll when.

First things first, here is a list of the 21 recruits that will be in
Blacksburg later this month for Tech’s second summer session. The expected
arrival date for these prospects is June 29th.

  • Nick Becton, defensive tackle/offensive lineman
  • Xavier Boyce, athlete
  • Jarrett Boykin, wide receiver
  • Marcus Davis, quarterback
  • Randall Dunn, wide receiver
  • Austin Fuller, athlete
  • Lyndell Gibson, linebacker
  • Jeron Gouveia-Winslow, safety/linebacker
  • Isaiah Hamlette, defensive end
  • Jake Johnson, linebacker
  • Joe Jones, defensive end
  • Quillie Odom , linebacker
  • Vinston Painter, offensive lineman
  • Dyrell Roberts, wide receiver
  • Allen Stephens, linebacker
  • Bruce Taylor, linebacker/defensive end
  • Dwight Tucker, defensive lineman
  • Michael Via, offensive lineman
  • Eddie Whitley, cornerback
  • Lorenzo Williams, defensive back
  • Ryan Williams, running back

Certainly, some of Virginia Tech’s top recruits in the 2008 class have been
cleared and are ready to go. Dyrell Roberts, a 4-star wide receiver
prospect, and Quillie Odom , a top linebacker recruit, are among those incoming
freshmen expected to contribute in the 2008 season. Both of those players
are set to go, which certainly is good news for Coach Beamer and company.
Chris Coleman will break down the potential impact of the incoming freshmen (and
the significance of those players who may not make it) below, so let’s focus on
the remainder of the class.

The above list contains 21 names, leaving nine more prospects who signed with
Tech in February. Here is the latest on those recruits…
