Virginia Tech’s summer camp sessions were tremendously successful each of the past two years. The 2008 version looks to be a success as well, as the Tech staff has already picked up a 2009 class verbal commitment from today’s camp.

This afternoon, Daniel High School (Pickens, S.C.) cornerback/kick returner Jerrodd Williams became the second high school senior to commit to Tech’s 2009 class.

“Jerrodd called me [earlier this afternoon] and told me he committed,” Daniel head coach Randy Robinson said.

“In talking to him about schools this spring, he mentioned Virginia Tech as one of the top schools he was interested in. He and his dad committed to going up there. They went up, he performed well, got the offer and committed.”

At 6-1, 185 pounds, Williams possesses very good speed and has consistently run 4.5 in the 40-yard dash in combines this spring (including a Nike Camp and a Shrine Bowl combine). A good overall athlete, he finished seventh in the state’s 100 meters event and fourth in the long jump in outdoor track this season.

On the gridiron, Williams is a big-time kick-returner and cornerback. Defensively, he racked up 43 tackles and picked off four passes en route to earning first-team all-area and first-team all-region honors for his performance.

“Defensively, he has great hips,” said Robinson, whose defense tallied 29 interceptions last season. “He is also outstanding on special teams. He returned three kick-offs for touchdowns last season, and he would’ve had four but he was knocked out of bounds at the four yard line on the last one. He is also one of our gunners and he gets down the field in a hurry and makes plays.”

Williams chose the Hokies over interest from several other Division 1A programs, including Georgia Tech, where he visited earlier this week. Virginia Tech was the first Division 1A program to offer.

“Coach Gray saw him at a track meet this spring and really liked him,” Robinson said of Virginia Tech’s interest. “He wanted to bring him up to camp to take a closer look.”

Certainly, the Hokies liked what they saw earlier today and now boast rising senior commitment #2. Last fall, Stone Bridge (Ashburn, VA) defensive tackle/offensive lineman David Wang became the first 2009 class player to commit
