Lackey (Indian Head, MD) cornerback Darrell Givens is cementing his standing as one of the most highly recruited cornerbacks in the 2009 class. Last week alone he added five Division 1A scholarship offers, giving him 17 in total. What other schools have now offered the talented prospect?

“Last Thursday, I picked up Florida. Last Wednesday, I picked up Virginia Tech and Colorado. Last Tuesday, I got Penn State and last Monday I got Illinois,” Givens updated.

Boston College, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina, Ohio State, Pitt, Rutgers and Virginia are among the programs that had extended official offers prior to last week. The 6-0, 179-pound prospect had previously listed a top four of Miami, Ohio State, Rutgers and UVa, but things have changed.

“Everybody is kind of equal,” Givens said. “I have 17 offers, so it’s hard for me to pick a top four or five right now.”

Givens is set to make several unofficial visits including a March 28th and 29th trip to Miami, an April 5th visit to Penn State for a junior day, an April 12th visit to the University of Florida and a trip to Ohio State on April 19th. Nothing else has been scheduled at this time.

Givens had hoped to make a decision as early as this spring, but now there does not appear to be a timetable.

“I’m not sure when I will make my decision,” Givens said. “I will go through the process and evaluate every school. I figure I’ll know when I’m ready to make my decision.”

The Maryland prep star knows what he wants in the school he ultimately chooses.

“I’m just looking for a great school with a family-oriented program,” Givens said. “I’m looking for a stable coaching staff. I want to be able to play early. I want to play as a true freshman.”

More with Givens…

Givens discussed the state of Virginia Division 1A programs.

“Virginia is still in consideration. I just haven’t had time to reschedule my visit right now,” Givens said. “I like Coach Poindexter a lot. I almost have the same relationship with him as I had with [former UVa primary recruiter] Coach London.”

“I still like Virginia Tech a lot. There are no bad things about Virginia Tech. I touch base with Coach Sherman and Coach Gray. They are real cool.”

Will Nekos Brown be a factor in your decision? (Brown, a defensive end at Virginia Tech, is Givens’ uncle.)
