Green Run (Virginia Beach, VA) defensive end Joe Jones enjoyed his official visit to Virginia Tech, which he had never visited before, and came away impressed with the campus and feeling comfortable with the players. The 6-3, 245-pound prospect has yet to make a decision, but did he name a favorite?
“Not quite yet,” Jones replied when asked if he had a favorite school. “I have to do a little more research.”
The first-team all-Tidewater selection did say that “Virginia Tech is at the top with Georgia Tech.” Having now made official visits to both favorites, Jones plans to visit Maryland next…or will he?
“I think I’ll take one more visit, but I might make a decision before that,” Jones said. “Maryland is scheduled for this coming weekend.”
Jones compared the official visits at Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech.
“I think they were similar, but the Virginia Tech coaches were real nice and I got along with them pretty well,” Jones said. “Location-wise, Virginia Tech seems like it is in the middle of nowhere and Georgia Tech is in the city of Atlanta. I think I like the city.”
Though Jones may prefer the city atmosphere of Georgia Tech, he did like Virginia Tech’s campus.
“My favorite part of the [Virginia Tech] visit was probably the campus,” Jones said. “Virginia Tech just had a real nice campus.”
Jones arrived in Blacksburg early Saturday before heading home this afternoon. He was accompanied by his mother.
“I got there about 9 in the morning,” Jones said. “I got to the hotel, changed and then ate breakfast at about 10. After that, I went to the college of Business. It sounded pretty good. They told us a lot about it. I think the academics are pretty good. They have a lot of tutors to help you.”
The Green Run senior also enjoyed spending time with Virginia Tech’s players.
“I felt pretty comfortable with everybody,” said Jones, who was hosted by defensive tackle Cordarrow Thompson. “They were very cool.”
Before leaving today, Jones had one final sit down with head coach Frank Beamer.
“I talked to Coach Beamer for about 10 minutes,” Jones said. “He showed me the depth chart and how they have only three...
